Sustainable building goes beyond thinking green.

As engineers, we follow a proven four-step process for every sustainability challenge. It gives clarity, rigour and momentum to every building project.

    Brief

    We discuss the brief and progressively refine the information. We probe for concrete expectations and jointly define the scope and ground rules, establishing a solid foundation for our subsequent analysis.

    Study & analysis

    We conduct studies, run the necessary calculations and analyse technical challenges, arriving at a well-founded analysis with clear guidelines and conclusions.

    Reporting & feedback

    We review the study report together in detail. Any feedback and additional input from other aspects of the construction process is incorporated into a jointly endorsed implementation plan.

    Construction phase

    We want to see shared ideas built. That is why we maintain close contact throughout the entire construction process, responding to every new challenge on site with well-considered adjustments.

Energy efficiency

Studie Tien is a pioneer in energy efficiency for large-scale construction. Low-energy buildings, passive buildings, net-zero energy buildings, we always maximise savings on energy costs through better insulation, reduced heat loss and on-site energy generation.

We conduct our own thermodynamic studies. Such a study is essential for achieving BREEAM certification as a sustainable building. Our simulations are legally required for passive buildings and for projects in Brussels exceeding 10,000 m².

What makes a building truly sustainable?

A building is truly sustainable when the decisions made during design and construction remain logical and valuable over the long term. That goes beyond energy consumption alone.

A sustainable building accounts for energy performance, material use, maintenance, service life and adaptability for the future. It is technically sound, contextually appropriate and deliverable within budget and programme.

For Studie Tien, sustainable building means solutions that are realistic today and remain relevant tomorrow. Not abstract ambitions, but choices that genuinely work in practice.

How is the energy efficiency of a building assessed?

The energy efficiency of a building is assessed through calculations and simulations that map out energy consumption. This covers insulation, airtightness, heating and cooling systems, ventilation and the use of renewable energy.

Through thermodynamic studies and EPB calculations, we analyse how the building performs under different conditions. These analyses allow design choices to be compared objectively and optimised with precision.

The result is a well-founded picture of energy consumption, enabling the design to be aligned with both regulatory requirements and the project's own ambitions.

What is a BREEAM certificate and how do you obtain one?

BREEAM is an internationally recognised assessment method for measuring and certifying the sustainability of buildings. The system evaluates projects across multiple criteria, including energy, water use, materials, health, transport and management.

To obtain a BREEAM certificate, a project must meet specific requirements within these categories, and performance is assessed by an accredited assessor.

Studie Tien supports this process by providing the necessary technical studies and substantiation, including energy and simulation studies. We ensure that sustainability ambitions not only look good on paper, but are also technically achievable and buildable within the project.
