    Fire suppression

    Fire is something you want to avoid at all costs. And if one does break out, limiting smoke and fire damage to a minimum is the priority. Rapid smoke detection, first-response measures and immediate suppression via sprinklers to protect machinery and assets
    are a matter of critical importance.

    How do you ensure the chosen systems fit within the project's budget and objectives?

    We never assess technical choices in isolation from their impact on the project. From the design phase, we contribute to the technical concept, ensuring that heating, cooling, ventilation and plumbing installations are sized to the actual needs of the building. 

    We avoid off-the-shelf solutions and look at correct sizing on a project-by-project basis. This prevents both undersizing and unnecessary overcapacity. Where multiple options are possible, we compare them on capital cost, energy cost and maintenance cost, so the project owner can make an informed decision.

    This reduces the risk of late-stage changes during construction and avoids solutions that fit the budget today but prove inefficient over the long term.

    What does a building services study cover?

    A complete MEP engineering study covers the design of all technical installations in the building. This includes heating and cooling, ventilation and air handling, plumbing and electrical installations, including low-voltage distribution and emergency power.

    We also address low-current systems such as data, access control and security, and fire detection and suppression systems. Depending on the project, these are supplemented with specific installations such as sprinklers, lifts, smoke extraction or project-specific systems.

    The study covers sizing calculations, construction drawings and technical specifications, and is coordinated with structural engineering and architecture within the project.

    The result is a technically coordinated whole across all disciplines, buildable on site, with minimal risk of conflicts or contradictory information during construction.

    What goes into a good fire suppression plan for buildings?

    A fire suppression plan starts from applicable regulations and the requirements of the fire authority and project owner. It covers the division of the building into fire compartments, the design of detection systems and the sizing of suppression provisions such as hose reels, extinguishers and sprinkler installations.

    Smoke extraction and overpressure systems for evacuation routes are also developed, along with emergency lighting and signage. These elements are technically coordinated with the building structure and other installations.

    A good fire suppression plan is not only code-compliant, but coherently developed across all disciplines, avoiding contradictions on site and allowing construction to proceed without additional modifications.

    Do lift installations require studies and calculations in a construction project?

    Yes. Lift studies are frequently underestimated or initiated too late in practice, yet they have a direct impact on the structure and layout of the building.

    The study covers the sizing of the lift shaft, coordination with the load-bearing structure, a traffic analysis of the lifts, and calculations for loads and suspension systems. Requirements around accessibility, firefighter functionality and emergency power supply also play a role.

    Because lifts are often located at the core of a building, they also influence the organisation of service shafts and circulation spaces. When this study is left too late, it frequently leads to structural modifications or additional interdisciplinary coordination. By addressing it early, we avoid rework and keep the design technically and spatially consistent.
